Controlled Humidity Storage Investment Optimisation for Major Defence Infrastructure
Value Delivered
45% reduction in projected capital expenditure
63% reduction in projected operating expenditure
Reduced infrastructure and land requirements
Increased confidence in investment decisions
Clear evidence base supporting the final solution
The Challenge
A defence client was preparing to invest approximately £100 million in a specialist controlled humidity storage environment designed to preserve critical assets and equipment.
The proposed design had been developed using conventional engineering assumptions and limited lifecycle analysis. While technically sound, there was little confidence that the solution represented the optimum balance between capital cost, operational expenditure and long-term performance.
The client required an independent assessment to determine whether the proposed investment could be improved and whether alternative approaches could deliver greater value.
Our Approach
Indicatura applied its Whole Life Value (WLV) methodology to assess the proposed solution.
Rather than focusing solely on initial capital cost, we evaluated the wider financial and operational implications of design decisions throughout the lifecycle of the facility.
Our analysis considered:
Alternative technology options
Facility configuration scenarios
Operational requirements
Demand assumptions
Capital expenditure implications
Operational expenditure implications
Sustainability implications and carbon emissions
To support decision-making, we developed a modular analytical model that enabled multiple options to be tested and compared.
The Outcome
The analysis identified several opportunities to improve value by challenging key assumptions within the original design.
Alternative configurations and technology options demonstrated that substantial savings could be achieved without compromising operational requirements.
